A point of the Air Force Space Command, Malmstrom Air Force Base is home to such major missile and space operation units as the 341st Space Wing and the 819th Red Horse Squadron.
The base was named in honor of Col. Einar Axel Malmstrom, who saw action during World War II in the European Theater of Operations, was a prisoner of war, received the Bronze Star, and later died in a local plane crash. Malmstrom is the only remaining active military base in the state of Montana. Two miles east of Great Falls, the base maintains a small-medium population of 3,523 active duty, 5,152 family members and 468 civilians. Military members with families may chose to live in government quarters or in Great Falls and the surrounding area. Unaccompanied enlisted members in grades E-1 through E-4 are normally required to reside in dormitories and should check in with the Central Dorm Management Office upon arrival. Housing consists of 258 officer-family units, 1,148 enlisted-family units and 684 unaccompanied enlisted units. Two commissaries serve personnel with an exchange and specialty shops. Children attend schools in Great Falls. A childcare facility is available with wait, and there is home care for 40. There is a health care clinic, with other care available at Benefis East in Great Falls.
